Victorian Terraced House Brickwork Restoration

The challenge

Like many traditional terraced properties, years of weathering, pollution and earlier deterioration had left the brickwork looking tired and neglected. Defective mortar joints had allowed moisture ingress, and spalled brickwork had begun to compromise the facade.

In many cases, original brickwork can be successfully restored when the correct methods and materials are used, rather than being replaced, rendered or covered up.

The solution

Following a detailed survey, the specialist team carried out a full brickwork restoration programme using traditional methods and breathable materials appropriate for Victorian-era construction.

The front elevation was chemically cleaned, defective mortar joints were removed, damaged and spalled brickwork was refurbished, and traditional lime mortar was used to repoint, brush and finish the facade.

Outcome

The property can now breathe correctly and continue performing as originally intended. Its warm Victorian brickwork, clean solid joints and distinctive character have been brought back to life.
